If you're not going out for a meal and are just going out for a few drinks with friends, then its a good idea to just have a small bite to eat and a glass of milk before going out.
This helps to line the stomach with some food which means the first alcohol that comes into the stomach will be less likely to be so damaging to the stomach lining. This is partly because eating food stimulates the production of stomach acid, but more importantly increases the secretion of the protective mucous that lines the stomach.
The milk works to counteract the acididty of the stomach so you are just left with a protective 'buffering effect' between the milk and the increased mucous production.
